LAKERS: Hornets fall to Kobe and Co., 110-99
LOS ANGELES - There was a day in the not-too-distant past when the Lakers and New Orleans Hornets were equals. They played in a Sunday afternoon game at Staples Center to determine which team would have the best record in the Western Conference.
That game was played late in the 2007-08 season, and the teams have traveled on different highways since they met at that crossroads and taken radically different paths en route to a 110-99 Lakers' victory Tuesday at Staples Center
The Lakers advanced to the NBA Finals in each of the past two seasons and won last June after losing the previous spring. They are considered one of the leading contenders to win the championship and feature a gallery of stars and emerging stars.
The Hornets haven't come close to matching the Lakers' success, have tumbled from the ranks of the elite teams in the West and fired coach Byron Scott last month. They went into Tuesday's game without their top scorer, Chris Paul, who was injured.
After a sluggish first quarter after which they led by a modest four points, the Lakers began to play in a manner that underscored the yawning gulf between the teams.
The Lakers outscored the Hornets 31-15 in the second quarter while shooting 58.8 percent and limiting the visitors to 27.3 percent shooting. The Lakers also out-rebounded the Hornets 16-7 in the period.
It might have been worse, but Darren Collison made a desperation 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to cut the Hornets' deficit to 62-42. The Lakers led by as many as 23 points late in the second quarter, the last time after Lamar Odom's driving layup.
Collison, a rookie from UCLA who filled in for Paul for the eighth consecutive game, was impressive at times. He scored a team-leading 13 points by halftime, but neither he nor his teammates matched the Lakers' firepower.
The Lakers were well on their way to their seventh consecutive one-sided victory by the time the teams returned to the court to start the second half. They haven't been challenged since losing back-to-back games to Denver and Houston on Nov. 13 and 15.
By the end of the third quarter, the Lakers led 90-69 and an all-too-familiar pattern of dominance emerged. The Lakers were too big, too strong, too polished, too determined and too deep for the inexperienced Hornets.
The Hornets are attempting to revamp their style of play on the fly, always a difficult task. They fired Scott, a former Lakers guard who had some degree of success as a coach with the New Jersey Nets before going to New Orleans.
"It's not easy to make changes after a team's been playing for six weeks, a month of training camp and two or three weeks of the regular season," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "But you can see them bringing things in slowly. They run the floor differently."
